Speaking at the opening of the IDEF 2007 International Defense Fair in Ankara, Erdogan said, "The Republic of Turkey, which has always paid great attention to its independence and freedom, will surely continue to have a mechanism to protect its territorial integrity and interests." Turkey's eighth International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF 2007) opened in Ankara Tuesday. Nearly 500 foreign and domestic defense firms from 45 countries attended the four-day event. Chief of General Staff Gen. Yasar Buyukanit was also present to open the fair. In related news, in an article in the current issue of Defense and Aerospace magazine, Buyukanit writes about the presence of the terrorist PKK in northern Iraq, "In no other place in the world can terrorists act with such ease," he says. He further stresses that the PKK has been receiving support from Europe and that certain national European legislatures as well as the European Parliament have held gatherings which encouraged the terror group. Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul told the opening ceremony that the fair was the biggest such event in Turkey and it is among the five major defense fairs in the world. "We have to keep our armed forces strong and well-equipped to safeguard peace and security in a geography of conflicts," Gonul said.
