Keeping score? You are about half right re VN and who fought there and when, but i'v already addressed this in a thread of a few weeks ago.
Yes, it was the troops who were screwed in both N and S VN, but the greatest error there, and the one being made in Iraq, is failing to realize (or accept the fact of) that in both nations, we were totally out of line politically...presidential self-interest going all the way back to Eisenhower. Both were supposed to be "easy targets" and both blew up in our faces.
As to History? History ends when a new president takes office. Each pres has to re-invent the wheel, so to speak, and none of them ever stops to ponder what has gone before. It's almost as if they go into a presidency asking themselves, "How can I jerk the world and the People around during my (hopefully) eight years? What incredibly stupid (NOT ignorant!) things can I fantacize into reality? How can I turn them into disasters?" Then the nation's people choose up sides and attempt to beat each other numb and into submission.
Brilliant!
