Russian Federation Russian Navy question

I saw in a video a contemporary Russian Navy attack submarine, which had on its tail a very large attachment which, to an aviator, appeared to be something shaped like a wing or tip tank atop a fin shape pylon.

What is that?

Default Re: Russian Navy question

Probably the towed sonar array ontop of the tail of an Akula (Type 971) class SSN, it works like a spool that unravels the sensor array some distance behind the boat. Keeping it out of its baffles and above the props to avoid damage etc and unwanted sonar noise:

That's it, Hooch... thanks.

I'd never seen anything like that before!
