HMS Scott, a survey vessel based in Devonport, Plymouth, took a break from a five month deployment in the Atlantic to represent the Royal Navy at the US equivalent of Britain’s Royal Navy Days.
Forming a flotilla with America’s newest assault ship, the USS San Antonio and the helicopter carrier USS Kearsage, HMS Scott sailed past iconic sights including the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
New York’s Fleet Week saw thousands of US and international sailors take part in military demonstrations and air displays and allowed the city’s people to meet the ship’s crews and learn about the capabilities of modern maritime services.

With their white-square-rigs, the 44 strong crew of HMS Scott stood out from the mass of US sailors ashore and they were cheered and applauded by New Yorkers during the parades.
HMS Scott’s home for the week was alongside their host HMS Anzio, at a pier only 10 minutes walk from Times Square, more accustomed to receiving cruise liners. This allowed the crew to visit New York’s sights including the Yankee and Shea stadiums where the crew watched baseball matches. They also took part in soccer and bowling competitions with the US ships participating in Fleet Week.
Many of the crew paid their respects at Ground Zero, finding it, five years later, to still be a moving place.

And when it comes to cooking, it seems 500 years of Royal Navy tradition proved too much for Big Macs and Hot Dogs, as HMS Scott’s catering department won the prestigious “Best Chow” competition, which was judged by some of New York’s top chefs and senior US Navy logistics officers. So much for super sizing me!
