Hotline set up for sailors,
families affected by Katrina

Hurricane Katrina has displaced tens of thousands of sailors and family members, and Navy officials want to get a handle on where they all are.

As a result, 24-hour help for sailors and their families is available by calling 1-877-414-5358.

“We’re starting to get calls trickling in, but we really need to hear from everyone as soon as they are able to call in,” said Lt. Jim LeViness, spokesman for the Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tenn. “We are working hard to get a handle on where everyone is.”

The call center will be based at NPC and can also be used by family members to find out if someone has been accounted for and is safe.

The lines will be staffed by Navy volunteers and will have connectivity with Navy, FEMA and other government agencies so displaced sailors can get assistance.

In addition, Navy officials also want to hear from representatives of commands located in the New Orleans or Gulfport, Miss., area and are requesting someone from each unit call the helpline and provide a contact number so command members can call in and muster.
