[MV] why I choose to unsubscribe

Hello, my name is Cliff. I have been a reader of this list for quite a
while. I have learned a lot about my truck here, but that was some time ago.
You see, this list has changed...significantly. The number of "off
topic"threads has surpassed the intended topic threads. The number of
salesmen has often made me feel like I was reading an informertial. I really
don't care about the good ol' days in the Army/Navy/Marines/CoastGuard/
Nato/Boyscouts/ etc. I really just wanted to share in the mutual hobby of
restoring old millitary vehicles. So I will unsub tonight, go out in the
garage, and do what it is we all at one point enjoyed....play with my big
green truck.
If you choose to flame me, don't waste the bandwidth. I won't see it.
but rather think about why each of you found this place in the first place.

Seems today is a good day to be rid of lots of dead wood. (Michael,
Jack, Cliff)
I couldn't possibly enumerate how many times postings have lead to
incredibly informative useful information.
As far as off topic threads, I love a good laugh. Pity there are so
many who fail to appreciate the handiness of the Delete button.

Correct, Mein Herr:

It's like being invited to a dinner party, and being told what to talk
about, and what not to talk about. I consider this forum an ongoing social
event, with members coming and going, whining, complaining, helping, getting
helped, etc. What a miserable place it would be if the only thing discussed
was (shudder) the way that O/D was applied 18 March, 1943, in Indiana.

Bring on the *****ing, I say. Let's talk about anything we need to, in order
to make life here a little more interesting.

Oh, and by the way: Bush Bumper stickers:

Well folks, it doesn't REALLY matter what WE consider or think this
forum is or should be used for. Arthur was very clear about what it was for
"In The Beginning". And we all read the list info upon sign up. If the
description made you 'miserable' and you signed up anyway, surprise! " What

HELLOOOOoooo!!!! That's what the list was established for! There are plenty
of groups and chat rooms on Yahoo if that's what you are looking for.
Belittling or ridiculing or just plain BS'ing is not the purpose of this
list. Rants about Muslims, what we should do about Afghanistan, Iraq, Bush,
Cheney, Kerry and the like are not, unless they have some kind of DIRECT
relationship to HMV's and/or their collecting operation, and ownership by
private citizens.
Posts about MV related things for sale, anecdotes about your experiences
in owning or operating an HMV, how things were done MV wise in the various
branches, what colors were used when, what type of licenses, CDLs,
insurance, titles and registration info, questions like "Anybody know
anything about XYZ's products?" or "Where can I get a left handed franistan
for an M977A3C2 used in Rhode Island National Guard in 1971?", looking for
contact info on.... etc., are all valid topics for the list.
Of late, a significant number of requests for info get answered by
direct replies to the poster instead of the list. This is why so many
questions get asked over and over and over. Because of this tendency, a
search of the archives gets you only the previously asked questions, not the
answers.
A significant number of us supplied funds when Arthur asked for
assistance to upgrade to better equipment to maintain the ORIGINAL list
purpose. Bottom line is that it is HIS list, not ours. HIS rules apply, not
our interpretation of what we think he meant or have gotten away with in his
absence. And while he has been busy elsewhere for quite a while, he IS
coming back. Heck, even Gerry Davidson, the originator of this list many
years ago, has bailed out of it to start a new European based list for
HMV's. This is ALL our loss since there seems to be a lot of WWII US
equipment 'over there' and a lot the owners, and their experience, are no
longer available to us on this list.

So, like Mom used to say to me, "Mister, you think you're funny? Wait
until your father gets home and we'll see how funny he thinks you are!"
I don't think he's gonna be pleased about what has been going on here
over the last year or so. Nor will some of the folks on the list be when he
gets back into the command chair and he hands them their hats. No bogey men
gonna come in the dark of night. And no social services to complain to when
Dad lowers the boom. It will be like a Twilight Zone episode where people
just blink out of existence...

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Arthur IS coming, and I think he might be
just a bit peeved over the beer spilled on his rugs and the cigarette burns
on the furniture. We haven't been keeping our rooms clean as he asked, so
don't be surprised when he uses a Bobcat to clean them out for us.
If he pulls the plug on this list, so be it. Start subscribing to other
lists in case he does. It will be a shame, but don't be surprised.......
Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll stop at making it a moderated Mil-Veh
list, which is WAY better than NO Mil-Veh list!

Hey guys,

Maybe you all should stop and think about all the drivel that has been =

this list recently. Very little MV content, but plenty of name calling =
and
the like.

Yes, I can delete the off topic threads. But, I have only so much time =
to
devote to reading my email. Wading through dozens of useless messages =
in
the hope of gleaning something helpful wastes my most precious =
commodity. =20

Pretty soon, this list is going to be 4 or 5 guys yelling at each other,
APB, the Dr., Sonny, and the book guy. The usual suspects. Not too =
long in
coming, I imagine.

It's funny, I know Cliff and he is about the most tolerant guy I know. =
It
ought to tell you something. You won't here it for the yelling, but you
ought to.

A convention that has grown in another forum to which I subscribe is to
include the words OFF TOPIC or ON TOPIC in the subject line and this seems
to work about 80% of the time. the forum is devoted to a somewhat
idiosyncratic make of British car, the Bristol and the forum contributors
can perhaps also be described as idiosyncratic. The problem of off topic
postings (some of which are well worth reading) has been recognised and
the reader gets a chance to skip or look at those contributions that bear
an "OFF TOPIC" flag.

Would it be appropriate to adopt the same convention here?
