Default [MV] New update on sputtering M-37

List,

IT LIVES!!! With the help of a house call from Dr. T one of my VERY MV wise
local pals it runs great.

The problem was VERY off timing.. 30+degrees offs(or more)... took a lot of
bashing on the distributor to bring it back to approaching the 2 degrees it
is supposed to be set at.

Now what the L could cause it to drift that far off? Given amount of effort
it took to adjust the dist it did not just move by itself.. keep in mind
gang I have no clue how this stuff works let alone how it gets messed up so
it does not work.

I want to thank everyone who contributed suggestions. The coil and carb
rebuild kit will not be wasted
I also plan to put a filter in the fuel line as it came w/o any from the Mil
Reserve... either this one never had one on it or it was discarded years
ago.

Now to get it painted, fix the oil leak, new wiper blades, wheel cylinders..
then I can start in on the M38A1...first step is to get it not to be a
"flintstone mobile"... more on that later.

Thanks again gang.

DL

My experience probably won't match yours because my M37 has the smaller
flathead six which I rebuilt to the deeper stroke used by the M37s.

Also, it was converted to 12 volts. Furthermore, all the accessories,
including the distributor were off a civilian truck.

However, with that all out of the way I experienced a similar problem. It
turned out to be a bad vacuum diaphragm. I seem to recall that the
distributor had a dual weighted and vacuum advance mechanism. But it's been
so long ago I'm not sure.

In any event, once I replaced the vacuum diaphragm and new lines it ran good
again.

DL,

Is it possible that the Distributor was not taken out & put back reversed
???

----------
M38A1 Project:
I completed a project, but after realizing how much damage there was, I
should have taken the tub off. It would have saved a lot of multiple
handling & labor.

Contact me off list prior to your M38A1 project. Where are you located ???

I can save you time by giving you sources for items & a list of reference
material.

If you have a T245 engine with an original oil pump and the original
distributor it will only go in one way. The tang on the distributor
shaft is offset to one side to prevent it from going in wrong. Having
said this, timing is originally set by timing the drive gear on the oil
pump. A 30 degree error in timing could be a tooth off on the oil pump
gear. Good luck with it.
