| Civilians | I've got to tow the new beast home next month and would like to use a tow bar and a heavy duty pick-up truck. I only have to tow it about 35 miles. so I was thinking of making a tow bar. I already have a lunette ring for one end and was planning on pinning the bar to the shackle mounts on the 35's front bumper. My questions are how long should I make the tow bar arms? Am I nuts to try this? Does anyone have any caveats or hints. (I'm a pretty good welder). Also a while back, I don't know where, someone said they found DOT 5 for around $30/gal. Can anyone give me a name/address for this? | Civilians | Alex, Where are you located? If you are near me I will go get that truck for you with my gooseneck. If I were going to build a towbar I would want the arms to be between four and five foot. I have DOT 5 brake fluid for $25.00 a gallon but shipping probably causes a problem, one might even have to pay for hazardous material, I'm not sure, again, if you're near me that won't be a problem. I'm in Northwest Florida. | Civilians | Alex, Don't try to tow the duece unless the pickup truck significantly out weighs the duece, and has virgin brakes. It's going to be a really slow drive home as you don't want to go more than 3-5 miles per hours when towing a duece with a pick-up. Don't try to build your own tow bar as you are only inviting and accident, instead pay a professional towing company the hundred bucks or so they ask to winch it onto the back of a ramp truck to haul it home for you. It's cheaper then buying a casket. While it is physically possible to tow a duece with a pickup I would strong NOT RECOMMEND IT, especially not 35 miles. -jma At 08:25 PM 7/7/2004, Alex wrote:[color=blue] >I've got to tow the new beast home next month and would like to use a >tow bar and a heavy duty pick-up truck. | Civilians | I believe that one lister turned in an idea like this: Use heavy chain and two pieces of pipe large enough to pass the chain thru. Be carefull to get a chain that will handle twice the weight of your new truck. If the pipe bends that's one problem, but if the chain breaks you are in trouble. I would also get enough chain to be able to implement the two standard safety chains for break away protection. Obviously the shackles etc. that you use should have the same strength as the chain. I am assuming that you can go via non highway roads and travel at very low speeds. I would think this would work if you take your time and are real careful. Disclaimer: I have not done this and cannot vouch for this method at all. Hope this helps, Bruce MVPA 23824 Alex wrote: [color=blue] >I've got to tow the new beast home next month and would like to use a >tow bar and a heavy duty pick-up truck. | Civilians | In spite of my previous post, I really think that James has the right approach. I am so used to doing things the hard way that I wasn't thinking this thru. Although technically pheasable, I don't really think it would be a good idea. Bruce MVPA 23824 James M.
