| Civilians | This Monday/Tuesday is the 64th anniversary of the 1942 Bruneval Raid, the first Allied Paratroop operation, designed to snatch the essential bits of a hitherto unknown German radar which was aiding in the devastation of Allied aircraft over Europe. Here are some interesting links: http://www.combinedops.com/Bruneval.htm And here is the famous aerial photo of the Wurzburg Radar: http://histru.bournemouth.ac.uk/Oral_History/Talking_About_Technology/radar_research/the_bruneval_raid.html And a better pic of the dish and oscillator: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/W%C3%BCrzburg_(radar) Unfortunately, the text on this site is in Dutch. There are at least two books on the raid that are well worth reading: Bruneval Raid: Stealing Hitler's Radar by George Millar (Paperback - October 28, 2002) Most Secret War by R. V. Jones (Paperback - August 1998) These are recent paperback versions of the original HB books and are both available at about $10/ea. The first is a description of the raid itself, the second is a history of the British Scientific intel operations in WW II and covers a wide range of subjects. Also, the local PBS station is running a series of 1/2 hour shows called something like 'The Great Raids of WW II". One episode was on Bruneval, and another was about the raid on the Nordsk Hydro Heavy Water plant. There does not appear to be a linked web site. -John ===Mil-Veh is a member-supported mailing list=== To unsubscribe, send e-mail to <mil-veh-off (AT) mil-veh (DOT) org> To reach a human, contact <ackyle (AT) gmail (DOT) com> Visit the searchable archives at http://www.mil-veh.org/archives/ |
