Consider that the system was started in the heady
days after WWII under Ike's administration when
the threat of invasion seemed amazingly real.
Then consider that after WWI, the British thought
they'd never see an invasion threat and then, 30
years later they were fortifying their country as
fast as they could.

What a joke.

I'd like to see what happens to the wings on a big plane, when it shears off
all the light poles installed down the median, and the nose gear gets
attacked by the Jersey barriers. I guess "landing and bouncing a few times"
strip would be OK, but not "taking off again" strips.

Out here where the land is wider, out in the
country, I could see a bunch of places that would
be perfect for running limited STOVOL operations
for tactical fighter aircraft.
