Default [MV] non-Americans serving in our Armed Forces

During the Vietnam War between 5,000 to 7,000 Canadian's crossed the
border into the United States to join the US Army. We came in legally,
obtaining a Green Card.

We all went through the standard background investigation, most
receiving the SECRET clearance. The Army could not levy a foreign
national into a war zone, we had to volunteer for overseas duty.

After serving my one year, I volunteered for a second tour, then a
third. I had a Maple Leaf drawn on my helmet cover and carried a small
Canadian Ensign with me. Still have the photo of it flying over the gun
pit during Tet '68.

Most Canadian's returned home and have a yearly reunion called 'Firebase
Canada'.
The Canadian Legion will not accept them as members. The Legion
considers them "mercenaries, because they fought under a foreign flag".

Six names on the Vietnam Wall are Canadian.

As for the draft dodger's that went North, it was best summed up in the
Toronto Globe & Mail: "The United States got the best of our young men,
while we got the worst of their's."

Meanwhile, at the start of WWII (1939) my wifes father left Detriot, went to
Toronto to enlist. The Canadian Airborne recruiter was closed so he went up
the street to the 48th Highlanders. Said they had a nice looking uniform!!!
He did Sicily, the bloody boot (Italy), Holland, and Germany. He came home
to the US and was inelligable for the GI bill, did draw a pitance of a
payment from Canada, and was inelligiable for all US veterans clubs etc.,
becase on the southern side of the Canadian border he, like you was a
"mercenarie, because he fought under a foreign flag". Imagine that!!!!!

GENTLEMEN,
I thank you all both on- and off-list for your appreciation and
consideration.
But as any 'Nam Vet will tell you, it's those 58-thousand plus who gave
the ultimate in Vietnam that deserve our complete and sincere
appreciation.

Now let's get back to discussing military vehicles in general, and the
self-anointed power trip of the Kansas DMV in particular.

No, they and the Eagle Squadrons in the RAF were
converted into Army Air Force units when the US
entered the War.

the Flying Tigers became the 23rd AF.

As I recall, they got pulled into the USAAC when
the US entered the war. There was some friction
between the established tigers and the newcomers
however.
