A few months back there was an article on TV that said the US was closing all its bases in Germany in order to concentrate its resources on the current problem areas. Either the media is wrong - now that would be a first, wouldn't it? ;-0 Or somebody has spent a lot of money in the wrong place. | Civilians | I heard that they had made a decision to cut back within Germany but I did not hear that they were closing all bases there. I don't think they will close Ramstein nor Landstuhl but I could be wrong. I watched the Navy build billions of dollars worth of different buildings and infrastructure at the NTC in Orlando during the late eighties and then five or six years later they got bulldozed to the ground and the Navy closed up and moved away. Made me sick. I went back there after not being there for two or three years and had a hard time finding my way around to my Credit Union building, which did not get dozed but the city forced them the remodel it to fit in with all the buildings they built there. | Civilians | I went back to the base I was stationed at in Foley Ala (Navy) about 5 years ago and its gone only the runways (aircraft) are still there.I was a kid when I got there in 1952 and when I was discharged in 1955 I went home from there.I figure I grew up there and when I saw it was gone I almost cryed as it was like my home or home town was gone. For MV contant I was a truck driver and equiptment operator.I also was part of the aircraft crash crew.We went there to pick up the pieces. But that is another story Gordon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sonny Heath" <sonny (AT) defuniak (DOT) com> To: "Military Vehicles Mailing List" <mil-veh (AT) mil-veh (DOT) org> Sent: Sunday, January 08, 2006 8:40 PM Subject: Re: [MV] Ramstein >I heard that they had made a decision to cut back within Germany but I did >not hear that they were closing all bases there. Real pity whatever the reason. I got a deck tour of the New Jersey in Sydney about 20 years ago and it was one very impressive ship.
