I have an MEP-003A generator, and I think it's a really nice set; it's my "keeper", and I have a few 10kW gasoline-powered gensets in various conditions that I'd like to unload. The MEP-003A is especially nice if it has the Acoustic Suppression Kit (ASK) installed, or if you manage to find one to install on it. I was very lucky to find somebody with a NOS ASK for my MEP-003A many years ago, and that really quiets it down a lot. I think that you'll find that it's easier to find parts for the gasoline sets than the diesel sets. Saturn Surplus carries lots of gasoline-powered genset parts. | Civilians | Most of the MEP series gensets have a early solid state voltage regulator and the manual tells you NOT to idle the genset. The reason is that idling the genset will knock out the voltage regulator. Been there, done that. So after you start the genset set the governor to the "Operate" position and rev 'er up. | Enlisted Warrior ![]() | Greetings, I hope I'm not "hijacking" this thread, but it seems to be the right place. I'm having starter issues with my MEP-003A Onan generator. Original starter worked fine until I had it rebuilt, and then it ran in wrong direction. Shop could not fix. I ordered new, aftermarket starter from API marine in Florida..it too, ran in wrong direction. I returned it..they "fixed" it, and it continues to run in wrong direction. Bear in mind that I live in remote southern Mexico, on the Belize border and everything I've described involves hours or days of travel and flights to U.S. The starter mounts to the generator portion of the genset, not the engine. The support group at API insists that I have the correct starter (CCW), as called for my military specs, and that they have never built a CW starter for this unit. My unit clearly turns over "backward" (air intake blows exhaust, exhaust creates vaccuum, zero oil pressure). Does anyone have a clue as to the problem?..or better yet, the solution. Appreciate any and all ideas/suggestions. Dave in Xcalak |
