Default [MV] MUTTS not running made simple again

It's time for the "wash & wear" answer to a simple problem that plagues the
list every six months or so.

Mutts have a propensity for quitting while running and these two
simple answers will cure about 98% of them. Yes, fuel pumps and other
problems arise but be sure to check these first and this will probably get
it. COILS in the distributor were not well made and a characteristic of
these types is it will run about 5-20 minutes and then quit running without
warning and will start up again but will be intermittant. The new coils
being sold from dealers that were made offshore are horrible so try to find
an older coil new or used. This is about 80% of the problem. FUEL is the
next culprit and the rest of the problem is the pickup tube in the fuel
tank. Many were made or put together with the pickup tube about 5-6 inches
off of the bottom. This means that when you have half a tank of fuel, it is
"empty" to the pickup tube. You can stick your hand through the fuel cap
opening and check for this. What I did in mine is find a piece of 3/8
rubber fuel line about 12" long or so with a 45 degree cut on one end and a
flat cut on the other. Slide the flat cut onto the pickup tube and make
sure the "droopy" end is going down to the bottom of the tank. This can be
done through the fuel cap opening and both fixes are easy to do. These two
items will fix most of this common and nagging problem.

Your jeep nut, Julian Burke
