| Civilians | DELETE if sappy sentimental memories offend. The fire-fighting service lost 343 members three years ago, in the capital of the free world. Several of them were my friends and colleagues. Seeing their names posted amongst the 3,000 or so who died in the Towers still gets to me. Regardless of the causes, effects, after-effects, or hare-brained posturing of all the world's politicians, some very dedicated people are gone, and they perished together, in just a few seconds, "Soldiers in a war that never ends" (a quote from the Firefighters' Memorial statue at 100th Street and Riverside Park). Not to belittle the accomplishments and sacrifices of the warriors in Arabia, but 343 in one shot is worthy of some kind of awe. Just remember them for a momemt tomorrow at 0915 EDT.
