| Civilians | I just bought an "as-is" diesel MEP generator, and the tank smells like old gas varnish. I can guess why this one stopped running!! Or, does old diesel smell the same way? | Civilians | I'll be interested in hearing other responses. But in my experience, since diesel is an oil, old diesel smells like - diesel. Unlike gasoline there is nothing volatile in it to evaporate off, leaving a residue. I wonder if somebody put the wrong fuel in your generator. | Civilians | Howdy Vernon, Diesel is a volatile organic compound and will evaporate just as gasoline will, but more slowly. RVP is a measure of fuel volatility used in the Petroleum industry, It is determined by submerging a fuel sample, in a sealed container with a pressure gauge, in a 100F degree water bath. Its level is read in PSI. The Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) of most gasoline is 9.0, some low volatility gasolines in the South achieve a RVP of 7.8. California currently mandates an RVP of 6.9. Diesel fuel, in its most common version has an RVP of 0.4. Personally, I do not know what dried out diesel fuel residue smells like, but it definitely will evaporate in a vented fuel system over a long time. | Civilians | It may very well evaporate over a long period of time but may not be in our lifetime. I bought a diesel farm tractor that had been sitting in a barn for about twenty years and it was three quarters full of fuel. I started it up and it ran fine. | Civilians | Diesel can also acquire a particular species of bacteria or algae, I forget exactly which. The little critters eat the part of the oil that tastes good, and leave the rest, along with, well, products of digestion, shall we say. This residue probably smells a bit different, and may not burn correctly. apb ----- Original Message ----- From: "Vernon Tuck" <vtuck@tucklings.com> To: "Military Vehicles Mailing List" <mil-veh@mil-veh.org> Sent: Sunday, July 25, 2004 7:03 PM Subject: Re: [MV] Fw: The smell of old Diesel > I'll be interested in hearing other responses. > > But in my experience, since diesel is an oil, old diesel smells like - > diesel. > > Unlike gasoline there is nothing volatile in it to evaporate off, leaving a > residue. > > I wonder if somebody put the wrong fuel in your generator. > > Vernon > > > > ===Mil-Veh is a member-supported mailing list=== > To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: <mil-veh-off@mil-veh.org> > To switch to the DIGEST mode, send e-mail to <mil-veh-digest@mil-veh.org> > To reach a human, contact <ack@mil-veh.org> ===Mil-Veh is a member-supported mailing list=== To unsubscribe, send e-mail to: <mil-veh-off@mil-veh.org> To switch to the DIGEST mode, send e-mail to <mil-veh-digest@mil-veh.org> To reach a human, contact <ack@mil-veh.org> |
