Default [MV] unsafe army trucks

For the past three days The Detroit News has run a front page, headline expose' on unsafe army trucks. I think that these articles will be of immense interest to our group. The address below will take you to all three days stories. I'll bet these will juice up the e-mail some.

Dave,
Just briefly scanned the page you listed and from that gleaned one
glaring recurring theme - LACK OF DRIVER TRAINING! For instance: the
driver with only an hour of driving experience and assigned to drive a 12
ton armored vehicle. Person giving that order should be disciplined for
incompetence !

As most on this list can attest to; these truck are safe if driven
properly, within their design perameters, BUT, it takes practice and some
instruction to do it right, ALONG WITH COMMON SENSE.

Sorry guys, but I can't fault the machine when the operator is IGNORANT.
GRRRR !!!

As a collector hobbyist, I have no training available. Anyone know of any kind of deuce/5t training that a civillian can get into? Even a manual to read would be a good start. I started this thread a few months back but it died out before we could locate any training materials.
It would also be interesting to get a copy of the GAO report that detailed the safety problems on these old trucks. Jim

Jim,

Just had another thought. You can check with your local drivers license
testing station. They should have a free handbook that will give you good
info about driving big trucks. Semi or straight truck the principles are
going to be the same for safe operation of the vehicle.

In Texas the book is titled TEXAS COMMERCIAL MOTOR VEHICLE DRIVERS
HANDBOOK and here's the best part--- It's FREE for the asking.from our
Dep't of Public Safety. I'm sure you state will have something similar.
The handbook is used for folks who are preparing for their class A CDL.

Good luck,

There are more than three stories, 11 so far, and they are interesting in
the extreme ! In particular, from one of them, "The Army has 10,000 2.5-ton
trucks and 3,600 5-ton trucks it considers 'overaged,' Maj. Gen. Gerald
Minetti...."

Thanks Dave

Hello Jim,

One of the most useful manuals is FM21-305 - "Manual for the Wheeled Vehicle
Driver". It is easily available and I think Portrayal Press offers copies for
sale. There is a similar FM for "Tracked Vehicles".

Another useful one, but this one is vehicle-specific, is TC21-305-4 -
"Training Program for the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle".

I'll bet that most HMMWV drivers in the Military have never even heard of it !

Kind regards....
ken
