DOD Evolution of Military Alphabet

From 1913 until the present, the US military has used a phonetic code for the alphabet to prevent confusion during communications, especially electronic ones. The current form has been used since 1957, although some older vets still remember what was used back then.

" 'Promise me one thing,' he said: 'If I die, don't go on TV and criticize the war... Don't go Cindy Sheehan on me. And don't let my boots be used in one of those anti-war demonstrations.' "
