Default Word Basics

I'm a WORD DUMMY, having only used Word Perfect until now, I apologize, but
I do not even know the correct terminology to usin in searching for
solutions to my problem. So, I'll describe it and hope someone is kind
enough to read and answer.

When I am typing email in Office 2003 (which is Word based) I am unable to
correct mistakes using the delete key. In addition, when I "cut" a mistake
and try to continue typing, the words ahead of the spot where I am typing
are "eaten".

Can someone tell me how I what to call that "word eating" feature and how to
disable it? Also, is it possible to use the delete key to remove a
highlighted word, rather than using "cut" to perform that task?

Thanks for reading this even if you can't help!

S.S.S.

Sarah,
I believe the "eating" problem is because you have the "insert" key
activated. The INSERT key switches modes between INSERT and OVERWRITE. If
you are in the "overwrite" mode, your typing will "eat" the existing
characters as you type. If you are in "insert" mode, your typing will push
the existing characters out in front of your typing.
Hope that helps.

Sarah,
I forgot, yes, the delete key will remove highlighted text. You have two
ways to remove text. You can "delete" it or you can "cut" it. If you
delete it, it's gone forever. If you "cut" it, you are removing it from
your current document but are temporarily saving it to your clipboard area,
and it is still available for "pasting" in another location. This is useful
with you have large areas of text that you need to move to another location,
document, or application, but you don't want to retype it all again. In
that case use the cut and paste functions. From any office application you
can use the menu commands EDIT>CUT and EDIT>PASTE, or the keyboard
equivalents are ^c (control-c) to cut and ^v (control-v) to paste.

Scott,

Thanks a million for your help!

You were correct, it was the insert key, a fact I had not known!

Unfortunately, I am still unable to remove text by highlighting it and then
hitting the delete key. In fact, the only way I can remove text is by
cutting. Not sure why, but I can live with that problem.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

It seems to me that the problem is your Delete-key. Can you use it in other
applications?
