| Civilians | Simple question, can Sprite backup restore a Pocket PC reliably to a previous state in the same manner that an application like Norton Ghost can? i.e. if I save a full backup of my pocket pc and then at a later date want to return to that working version of the pda, can I just execute a Sprite backup and revert to the version of the pda that was backup up even if this is from a hard reset? RELIABLY? All views welcome Patrick |

Once the backup was on a memory card and the second time saved to internal ROM. Both times it worked perfectly and it was up and running in a couple of minutes. Nick |

| Civilians | Any backup can fail, it's up to you to verify it if you have concerns. | Civilians | I use it all the time, thru several hard resets .. There are some caveats, like don't backup the mail folders,. and it doesn't work with certain aux storage, but it has saved my butt several times! | Civilians | How does one prevent it from backing up mail automatically (manually you just untick the box, but am thinking about when, say, the battery hits 10% charge)? "Dr. Rick G. | Civilians | Well I did a backup when I had my iPaq just where I wanted it with the best set of tools installed and then checked it for speed etc. I then did a hard reset and checked speed again,,, seemed pretty much the same speed (have a fair few Today plugins running and was wondering how they were affecting performance). Did a full restore with Sprite and everything is back exactly the way it was. RELIABLY? > All views welcome > Patrick My experience is with the iPAQ built-in backup, which many have claimed is based on Sprite (I don't know whether this is true or not). FWIW, I have never had a backup unreadable (I have not tried to use it across ROM updates -- that is a no-no), and I have been able to recover any file of choice from the backup (in the case of a ROM update, I have used the previous backup to restore [selectively] My Documents and my Favorites). > . . . like Norton Ghost? In this case, my experience is NO. When you hard-reset your PPC, some system-generated files get loaded into RAM (some of the program shortcuts and Favorites, for example). I find that restoring from backup does not erase this detrius, so after restoring from backup after a hard-reset, I still have a (very small) amount of file cleanup to do. The process appears to work by overlaying all backed-up files on top of whatever was already present at the time you do the restore, and does not appear to be image-based in the manner of Ghost. - Skip |
