Default 2 versions PPT on same OS?

I have a laptop running WinXP Pro. I also have installed
Office XP. Unfortunately, my work is still using PPT 97.
Although I can create a PPT presentation with the PPT in
Office XP and save as a ppt 97 file, it increases the file
size exponentially.

Can I install PPT 97 on my laptop along with the PPT in
Office XP?

Robin,

This will help explain your options. Basically, you install the older
version first:

First of all, PowerPoint 2002 and PowerPoint 97 share the same file format, so
just save it as Presentation (*.PPT). Saving it in PowerPoint 97 format is
really double saving it - - in PowerPoint 2002 format also in PowerPoint 95
format which is uncompressed. Even though they share the same format, there are
features and functions in PowerPoint 2002 that are not supported in PowerPoint
97. If you are creating in PowerPoint 2002 and want to edit and play it in
PowerPoint 97, I would recommend that you go to Tools > Options > Edit and
disable the three items at the bottom of the window. Then what you do at home
will also work at work. <G>

Do you have the installation CD for Offic XP? If so you can uninstall Office XP
and then install PowerPoint 97 and then re-install Office XP. The oldest
version needs to be installed first and each version should be installed to its
own folder. I have four versions running happily on my WinXP Pro system.

Instead of installing two different versions, you can also simply switch off
the new features. The file format is common across 97-2003 so you don't
need to save it to a 95-97 format which causes the file bloat.

To turn the new features off in 2002:
1. Select Tools | Options | Edit tab.
2. Tick the items under 'Disable new features'; namely 'New animation
effects', Multiple masters' and 'Password protection'.
3. Click on OK.

With these options set your version of PPT 2002 is equivalent to PPT
97/2000.
