Marines MCAS Yuma Helicopter Crash

Three Marines and 1 sailor died, and 1 Marine was injured when a HH-1N Search and Rescue helicopter from Headquarters Squadron Marine Corps Air Station Yuma crashed approximately 20 miles north of Yuma near the Colorado River.

The names of the dead and injured are being withheld for 24 hours until the families of the victims are notified.

The 3 Marines and 1 sailor were pronounced dead at the scene at 12:30 a.m. Friday as a result of the mishap, said 1st Lt. Rob Dolan, MCAS Yuma Public Affairs Officer. The bodies are being taken to Naval Medical facilities by United States Marine Corps transportation.

The injured Marine was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center by a secondary MCAS Yuma search and rescue helicopter. He is listed in stable condition according to the MCAS Yuma medical officer.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

A HH-1N Search and Rescue helicopter has been missing since approximately 4 p.m. The aircraft, from Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron Marine Corps Air Station Yuma carrying four Marines and one sailor, was last reported returning from a routine training flight near the Yuma Proving Ground.

At this time, an additional search and rescue helicopter from the air station, Border Patrol, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing aircraft and national search and rescue assets from Luke Air Force Base are assisting in the search.
