Eight Marines killed in fighting west of Baghdad

FALLUJA, Iraq (CNN) -- A suicide car bomber was responsible for an attack on Saturday that killed eight U.S. Marines and wounded 10 others in the deadliest single attack on U.S. forces in six months, Marine Lt. Col. Michael Ramos said Sunday.

The attack on the Marine convoy happened in the rural area of Zaydan, near Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison, Ramos said. The car used in the attack was a sport-utility vehicle.

It was the highest single-day death toll for U.S. forces since a car bomb killed eight soldiers on April 29 in Mahmoudiya, south of Baghdad.

U.S. forces launched renewed attacks against Falluja on Saturday, striking targets from the air and clashing with militants on the southeastern edge of the city.

Jets and helicopters have pounded Falluja for weeks to lay the groundwork for a possible operation aimed at ending violence by anti-American and anti-Iraqi government insurgents.

Falluja has been in insurgent hands since April, when Marines were ordered to withdraw from the city's perimeter. Responsibility for the city was given to a squad of former Iraqi soldiers from the city and the police force.

The city remains home to a terror network run by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian terrorist who has sworn allegiance to Osama bin Laden, U.S. officials have said. Al-Zarqawi is believed to have masterminded the beheading of several American hostages, as well as attacks on United Nations and Red Cross targets in Iraq.

Other developments

• Insurgents riding in a convoy shot and killed two Iraqi national guardsmen near Baghdad on Sunday morning, Interior Ministry spokesman Col. Adnan Abdul Rahman said. The two soldiers were brothers. About four and a half hours later, police found the burned bodies of two other Iraqi guardsmen in Baghdad's Al-Orfalli neighborhood, police said.
• Six Iraqis were killed and 17 wounded Saturday in a car bomb attack outside the offices of Al-Arabiya television network in Baghdad's al-Mansour district, according to an updated casualty count from Iraqi police. The Dubai-based network said it received an official statement from a little-known Iraqi militant group, the Twentieth Brigades, denying reports that it attacked the office. An Islamic Web site published another statement earlier Saturday, in which the group allegedly took responsibility for the attack.
• Witnesses said Iraqi forces fired randomly and threw hand grenades, hitting three minibuses and three vans, after a U.S. convoy came under attack near Haswa, a town about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of the Iraqi capital, the AP reported. A hospital official said at least 14 people were killed and 10 others wounded, according to the AP.
• Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura confirmed that the headless body found Saturday in Baghdad is that of Japanese hostage Shosei Koda. Koda was kidnapped Tuesday, and his captors threatened the next day to behead him unless Japan pulled its troops out of Iraq.

then the terrorists will read it too and blend in with the refugees.then another city will become a haven for them and more people and troops will be killed. the thought is nice to kill them all,but it just wont work.
