AR RAMADI, IRAQ -- Marines deliver textbooks for police literacy program
THE WAY AHEAD:
The 1st Marine Division is currently focused on destroying Anti-Iraqi Forces in the Al Anbar province. Simultaneously, the Marines are establishing patient, persistent presence in the key areas throughout the province while supporting the development of competent, trustworthy, Iraqi Security Forces and conducting civil military operations.
CIVIL MILITARY OPERATIONS:
Marines took delivery of 1,500 textbooks for the Iraqi Police Literacy Program. The books were turned over to the Ministry of Education. They will be used as course material for the first course of 500 Iraqi police attending basic literary training.
The Iraqi Police Literacy Program will be conducted in two phases, with the first phase including 500 students. The program will eventually include up to 2,000 students.
The training program is designed to ensure Iraqi police in the Al Anbar Province are proficient in reading to at least a 6th grade reading level.
Marines also began an Iraqi Civil Defense Corps civil affairs training course. The course is designed to familiarize Iraqi officers with civil affairs, Law of War and area assessment for military-assisted improvements to communities.
Marines made a $3,930 payment for renovations to the Kumat Primary School near Al Kharma. The payment finished out contracted work totaling $9,935. Marines also paid out $3,380 to start additional work on the Youth Center. That project is estimated to cost $6,280. An initial payment of $25,000 was made for improvement for a recreation center, which will total $56,500. Marines also paid $8,000 to start work on a $30,859 project to Al Nasir Mosque and $31,260 was paid out for electrical improvements that will total an estimated $131,250 in upgrades.
