.S. offers rewards for 'bad guys' in Afghanistan

CNN) -- The U.S. military in eastern Afghanistan said it is starting a "Most Wanted" campaign, with rewards ranging from $20,000 to $200,000 for the capture of 12 midlevel Taliban and al Qaeda leaders.

Posters and billboards with pictures and names of the insurgents are being printed, Maj. Chris Belcher said.

They will be erected by Afghan security forces across a region that includes Nangarhar, Ghazni, Paktia, Paktika, Nuristan, Khost and Kapisa provinces, Belcher said.

The program is aimed at familiarizing Afghans with the names and faces of such Taliban and al Qaeda leaders who have engaged in insurgent activities such as roadside bombings.

The military is hoping the program will spur Afghans to turn in the insurgents.

"All of them are midlevel bad guys," said Belcher, a spokesman for the Combined Joint Task Force 82.
