DLO awards bomb support contracts worth £33 million

Two contracts to provide enhanced logistic support for bombs carried by RAF and Royal Navy fast jets were awarded by the Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO) to EDO MBM Technology Ltd and Portsmouth Aviation Ltd on 21 August 2006.

Under the new arrangements, EDO MBM Technology Ltd will provide technical support, repair and procurement for Tornado, Jaguar, Hawk and Harrier bomb carriage and release equipment.

Portsmouth Aviation Ltd meanwhile will provide the same range of services for practice bombs, bomb tails, bomb fuse 951 and ancillary equipment.

Worth over £33 million pounds in total, the two contracts will replace over 32 separate agreements, streamlining the in-service support of bombs and saving the MOD £0.5 million pounds over the next five years.


Group Captain Rob Ryder, head of the DLO’s Air Launched Munitions team said:

"Today’s contract awards will optimise support to the front line, ensuring that critical bomb weaponry remains operationally effective and airworthy at all times. The new arrangements with EDO MBM and Portsmouth Aviation Ltd are also a smarter way of working that will deliver notable savings."

The contracts with EDO MBM Technology Ltd and Portsmouth Aviation Limited are worth nine million and £24 million respectively. Work will sustain jobs at the contractors’ sites in Brighton and Portsmouth.
