Default Flight Simulators: A dead genre...?

Where did all the Flight/Space Simulators go?

The last really "good" sim that I can remember was the release of Freespace II, and that was nearly 7 years ago. Before that there were such esteemed classics as X-Wing/Tie Fighter, Descent, Wing Commander and the all the Janes titles.

Is there anything left to speak of for this genre, or is it dead?

Default Re: Flight Simulators: A dead genre...?

I haven't kept up with flight simulations. My favorite is Janes World War Two Fighters and that came out in 1998. It seems that flight sims lately are the same: cool graphics but lack the creativity and details that make for good simulations. I've never been a fan of Microsoft's flight simulation series, though the flight school I went to seemed to like them. They don't seem real any more. It's a shame more flight sims haven't come out or some of the ones that did (like Jane's Attack Squadron) were flops. I don't think the genre is dead, just in hibernation or maybe a coma. It will only take one really good sim to get the genre back.

Janes was a great game, but I was always in love with Wing Commander, even the 2 Privateer games were awesome.

Did anyone ever play A-10 Cuba?

Default Re: Flight Simulators: A dead genre...?

My computer never liked flight sims, but I might get one sometime.

I think the genre dropped a bit over here after the talk that the 9/11 people trained on MS Flight Sim

It seems the flight sim genre is on a down while Grand Theft Auto type games are on the up. Mindless violence rather than using your brain.
