How many settlers were on that original trip to Jamestown? 6. Name the commander of that voyage. 7. An early settler introduced new methods of curing a crop that became a basis of prosperity for Jamestown. Name him and the crop he made famous. 8. John Rolfe married an Indian princess who died of small pox in England just when they were planning a return trip to Jamestown. Name that Indian maiden. 9. Name the Indian chief whose daughter is the subject in the preceding question. 10. In 1619, the House of Burgesses met in Jamestown. What was unusual about this event? Answers: 1. Elizabeth and Philip are husband and wife. 2. Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in America. 3. Jamestown was founded in 1607, making this year its 400th birthday. 4. The trio of ships was the Discovery, Godspeed and Susan Constant. 5. There were 104 newcomers to the new settlement. 6. It was Captain John Smith of the London Company. 7. John Rolfe used his methods to turn tobacco into a major crop for Jamestown's prosperity. 8. The Indian princess was Pocahontas. Many people in Jamestown today want Pocahontas' remains returned to America to be interred at her old home with a memorial gravesite. 9. Pocahontas' father was Powhatan, whose personal name was Wahunsonacock. Powhatan was his tribal name. 10. That meeting of the Burgesses was the first meeting of a representative government in the American colonies.
