Default Statehood Quiz

(Answers are below)

Statehood

1. Name the first and last of the original 13 colonies/states to ratify the Constitution, thus declaring independence from Great Britain.

2. Including those in the preceding question, how many of the 13 colony/states can you name? The answer lists them in the order in which they passed the document -- in case you want to try to list them in order.

3. What state originally requested admission into the United States as the State of Deseret? For Bragging Rights, what does "Deseret" mean, and what number was the state?

4. Name the state with the largest land area and the state with the smallest.

5. Which of the 50 states was the last to join the Union? For Bragging Rights, tell us in what year it joined.

6. On May 6, 1937, a German zeppelin burst into flames in midair taking 36 lives. Name the ship and its location at the time of the tragedy.

7. What noted U.S. flood on May 31, 1889, took some 2,200 lives?

8. Name the top-selling, packaged cookie marketed in the U.S.A.

9. What is the spellout of the famed initials VFW?

10. "Stagecoach" is seen as John Wayne's first starring film role in 1939, but the Duke had played a major role in another film as early as 1930. Can you name it?

Answers

1. Delaware was the first of the 13 colonies to ratify the separating document; Rhode Island was the 13th separating state.

2. The list, according to the time of their approval, is Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island.

3. Utah, our 45th state, made that effort. Deseret means "Land of Honeybees." It was admitted as Utah in 1896.

4. Alaska is the largest in area; Rhode Island is the smallest.

5. Hawaii, our 50th state, joined the nation as a state on August 21, 1959.

6. The Hindenburg blew up in Lakehurst, New Jersey.

7. It was the tragic Johnstown flood in Pennsylvania.

8. It's Nabisco's Oreo Cookies.

9. VFW means Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S.

10. The Duke's earliest full-length appearance was in the film "The Big Trail."
