| Head Mouse Trainer ![]() | By C.J. GREGORY/Turret Staff Writer Family members on Fort Knox have another off-post educational tool at their disposal. The Radcliff branch of the Hardin County Public Library offers a series of educational and entertaining programs to the public each month of sufficient quality to broaden anyone’s horizons. And Fort Knox personnel are taking advantage. “We see a lot of attendance from families at Knox,” said Chelle Tabor, the library technician and director of programming. “They have the option to use the (on-post) Barr library, so we’re like an additional option for them.” In addition to regular library offerings and programming, Tabor said the Radcliff library plans a variety of special speakers, events, and programs every month. During January the library has scheduled an array of events. A main draw this month is an expert on pan-African studies from the University of Louisville. “We’re going to highlight a tribe that is pretty fascinating,” she said. “Their oral traditions and art have survived for 1,000 years, and their star charts have been proven accurate in the last five years. There’s a whole mystery surrounding them.” After that, Tabor said there will be a solo theatrical performance of the life of Harriet Tubman, one the facility has offered in past years. “Last time, she drew a crowd of more than 100,” Tabor said. “She really blew me away.” Add to that seminars on past-life regression, ghost chasers, weather, and weight loss, and there’s something for nearly everyone. And that’s what the library’s small staff is proud of. “As the north branch of the Hardin County Public Library, we are very small,” Tabor said. “But what we’re trying to do is offer our community as much as they would get from a big library.” Since the programming schedule began about a year ago, Tabor said the public has responded very well. “It’s amazing the reaction that we’ve gotten,” she said. “Circulation is up, people are renewing their library cards, and there are a lot of families coming in together.” Tabor pointed out that although some months are a little bit slower than others, the staff tries to plan events based on how many people have shown up for previous events. “We try to do programming based on attendance for the past couple of years,” she said. “But there’s always some little something.” Tabor pointed out that there’s no shortage of exciting events in the works. “There is quite a bit of stuff coming up,” she said.
