| Snake-eater ![]() | Hopefully it will be a good one. I've seen several in Philly and I hope this one lives up to expectations. GO ARMY! Army, Navy Game has new Significance Philadelphia Inquirer | December 02, 2005 Navy quarterback Lamar Owens sat in a Philadelphia hotel room last week, thinking about how quickly his four years as a Midshipman have flown by and how important it is to win his final game against rival Army. If the Midshipmen win the 106th meeting between the teams at Lincoln Financial Field tomorrow, it will be their fourth straight victory over Army. "I was just sitting in my room and thinking how fast four years went by," Owens said. "I can't believe it. This is the last time I'm going to be in this game. I really want to make it special." Both sides have said this game will be different from recent years. For the first time since 1996, both teams have beaten Air Force. Tomorrow's winner will claim outright possession of the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, which was stolen from the Navy campus earlier this week. Army started the season 0-6 but has won its last four games - its longest win streak heading into the Army-Navy game since 1967. After dropping its first two games of the season, Navy has won six of its last eight, including a 38-17 comeback victory over Temple. The all-time series in the Army-Navy game stands at 49-49-7. The Midshipmen lead Division I schools with an average of 286.7 rushing yards per game with its option attack. Overall, they average 408.8 yards per game. "You can call it antiquated," Navy coach Paul Johnson said of the option offense, "but it's leading the nation in rushing again." Owens, operating that option offense, has 731 rushing yards on 180 carries. He could make Owens a popular last name in Philadelphia again. Entering the season with 129 career rushing yards, Owens ran for 122 yards on 19 carries in a 23-20 opening loss to Maryland. "After the first game, I knew he could translate it to the playing field," Johnson said. "More than anything, I had to prove to [my teammates] that I could take the hits," Owens said. "I think some people doubted I'd last the season. By the second game, the guys saw I wasn't going to quit." He will have to contend with Army's tough defense, which features sophomore defensive back Caleb Campbell. Campbell has 87 tackles and five interceptions. Army boasts a double threat in the rushing category. Senior running back Carlton Jones leads the Black Knights with 944 yards and six touchdowns on 247 carries. Senior Scott Wesley has rushed for 519 yards and 10 touchdowns on 99 carries. If Owens is thinking about a victory, you can bet Jones is dreaming about it, too. Both teams have endured rough patches. For Army to have turned around its season is a gratifying feeling, Jones said. Only a win against Navy would make it that much better. "It would be the finish to a perfect story," he said. Army vs. Navy Tomorrow, 2:30 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field.
