Default The Bow

In a book I am reading (concerning air power), apropos of the US Battleship NEVADA during the attack by fascist Japanese air forces at Pearl Harbor, it was written (roughly), that NEVADA was the sole capital ship in harbor that day who got underway during the attack, but she ran aground due to a torpedo through her "bows"... plural.

It has always been my understanding that a ship has but one bow.

Are there more than one "bow"?

Physically a ship has one bow. However, it could have been a fancy way that the author used to describe a torpedo going through the bow in one side and out the other, hence it could have gone through the port side of the bow and out the starboard side, in other words two bows. That's what I can make of it.

By the way, there were three ships that got underway that day. While the Nevada was a "Capital" ship, ie. battle ship, the harbor tug Hoga and the Coast Guard Cutter Taney both got underway and performed admirably during the attack. both the Taney and the Hoga are still afloat today.

Thanks. Bill...

Gotta love it, how history is, shall we say, "underwritten", eh?

The Taney has been declared a national historical monument. The Hoga has been nominated to become a national historical monument.
