| Enlisted ![]() | Press Release Date: PA3 Kelly Newlin Contact: (617) 223-8515 UPDATE: COAST GUARD AIR STATION CAPE COD HELICOPTER CREWS SAVE 42 LIVES IN NEW ORLEANS BOSTON - A Coast Guard crew aboard an Air Station Cape Cod HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter deployed to New Orleans for the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina saved 42 lives today during rooftop evacuations. Coast Guard crews assisted in the rescue of about 1,200 people stranded by the high water conditions in the New Orleans area Monday and thousands more were rescued this morning. The First Coast Guard District in Boston forward deployed one HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod to Elizabeth City, N.C. Sunday afternoon in anticipation of rescue and relief efforts that would be needed following Hurricane Katrina. An HH-25 Falcon jet also from Air Station Cape Cod was deployed to the region affected by the hurricane to fly logistical support by carrying personnel and hurricane relief supplies. This crew is presently enroute back to Air Station Cape Cod. A second helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod is scheduled to be deployed Wednesday in support of Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew will join more than 30 Coast Guard aircraft already in the region conducting search and rescue, damage overflight assessments and logistical support.
