Default Re: Burials at Sea

Are these the lyrics to the hymn you were talking about, or is there a different one?

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep,
Its own appointed limits keep.

Oh hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea! Amen.

Eternal Father, lend Thy grace
To those with wings who fly thro' space,
Thro wind and storm, thro' sun and rain,
Oh bring them safely home again.

Oh Father, hear a humble prayer,
For those in peril in the air! Amen.

Oh Trinity of love and power,
Our brethren shield in danger's hour,
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them where so ever they go.

Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea! Amen.

I believe this is regarded as the USN hymn, tho it amply applies to all who are at sea.

Only once, I heard the Annapolis choir sing this, on television.

as a Cadet at a Navy military school, I heard it every Sunday for 4 years. Still chokes me up. But here are the verses for the Coast Guard:

"Eternal Father lord of Hosts
Watch o’er the men who guard our coasts.
Protect them from the raging seas
And give them light and life and peace
Grant them from they great throne above
The Shield and Shelter of thy love.

Always ready, strong they stand
Our Coast Guard helps maintain this land
Semper Paratus is their call
As they shirk self to give their all
In duty, tough, demanding, hard
God guide and Bless our great Coast Guard"

Almost forgot, a quick search revealed that there were 9,300 known deaths in the Merchant Marine during WW2. Also 31 ships vanished without a trace.
