| Non-Commissioned Officer ![]() | After 37 years, Susan Atkins is the longest housed female inmate in California penal history. She has had 1.4 million dollars in health care needs met and paid for by the tax payers of California since March when she was removed from the Woman's Institute in Chino and placed in a nearby acute medical facility for terminal care. There are so many victims here including the family of Susan Atkins. She is hardly suffering and hardly alone and hardly deserted in her last days of a horrible terminal illness. In all probability, released the only comfort that might be achieved would be for her family who have stated that when she joined Charles Manson's "family" some four decades ago, they lost their family member. She was after all a daughter, a sister, and an aunt. But whether housed/hospitalized to die at State of California expense or family expense with hospice home care, Susan Atkins is preparing for that last journey "home" to meet her maker. While in prison Susan Atkins became a Christian and established an active prison ministry. May she know and experience peace in her passing. May God grant comfort and resolution to the families of her victims in her passing as well.

| Non-Commissioned Officer ![]() | In a sense, don't you agree, that all of us are on a journey from the moment of birth with a death sentence attached? For Manson family members it was commuted to life in prison from a defined date in 1971 by the U.S. Supreme Court because of the way the California death penalty at that time was read and interpreted. The only things that changed in Susan Atkins' and any of the other Manson family members convicted in the brutal and heinous Tate-LaBianca muders in that decision were the how and when the sentence of death would happen. For Susan Atkins' her death sentence comes 37 years after conviction and is being carried out by brain cancer. Hardly more humane than the gas chamber would have been 30-35 years ago. If she were an animal, she would have been euthanized to put her out of her pain and that would have been considered humane treatment. Interesting how we define and redefine such words.
