Post Tossed 40 feet, infant survives tornado

Baby Found Safe In Mich. Tornado Debris

WILLIAMSTON, Mich. -- At least six people have been killed in a line of unusually severe October storms this week.

The thunderstorms, some spawning tornadoes and high winds, destroyed homes in Michigan and Indiana and collapsed a trailer in Kentucky as they struck Thursday and early Friday.

One lucky survivor from a trail of destruction from high winds, heavy rains and tornadoes in several states since Thursday was a 14-month-old boy in Millington Township, Mich., reported Detroit-area television station WDIV-TV.

The baby was tossed about 40 feet when a twister destroyed his house early Friday. Fire officials said a neighbor found the child under a pile of debris, still in his crib. The neighbor said first he heard a whimper, then found the baby lying beneath the mattress in the upside-down crib, protecting him in the debris. He survived with just a few scratches and bruises.

The baby's parents told WDIV that their home was leveled, and they are in complete shock.

"Sometimes miracles happen," said Millington Township firefighter Dan Detgen.

Tornadoes are the strangest storms of all, I think. Thank God the baby survived! He'll be able to tell this story all his life, and no doubt he will.

Yes, thank God the baby and the entire family survived! A 29-year-old man northwest of us died the same night when his house fell down around him.

They showed the baby on TV last night and what a little doll. Apparently, they also had a young daughter who also survived. The father said that he was sucked out the front door.
