| Racy Ol' Lady ![]() | As the middle-income class falls into the abyss, this will continue to be a growing problem. It's good that some stores are conscious of it and lowering prices, but prosperity was better. We're being run down by the overgrown central government, not just having it lead us. But we're so smart! We continue to put the same politicians in office where they can continue to destroy the freedoms we had.

| Dazed and Confused ![]() | Cost of living in the US 'vs' UK, hmm don't get the Brit's started you have no idea how good you have it compared to us. The day to day life for the average Brit now is rediculously expensive: Rent (or Mortage), Income TAX, NI contirbutions, VAT on just about everything now, Council TAX, TV Licence (a legal requirement in th UK just to watch the goggle box) water rates. The list goes on and on, but even the base costs of the basics in the UK (food etc) are getting on for the most expensive in the world. Oh yeah and fuel prices, I think we are currently paying in the region of SIX times what you pay for the average gallon of gas here now! ![]() ... Hooch, climbs down from his soap box - rant over ....

| Racy Ol' Lady ![]() | Just in passing, Hooch -- Are your politicians as expensive as ours? I really wonder. Look at the obscene money collecting going on here in order for a person to run for office. TV is the most expensive part of it, I think -- and because of all this, the politician is bought by special interest groups and never truly serves the people he is pledged to serve. He serves big business or some other lobby, instead of the people. I guess it's the same there, but is it?

I think Mr Billy Connelly summed it up best: "The desire to want to be a politician, should barr you from ever becoming one" Or as we say over here: Q: How can you tell when a politician is lying? A: Their lips move!

| Junior Officer ![]() | Snowden I think your post concerning politicians was more about the root cause of living paycheck to paycheck. Is that what you meant? I look at politicians expanding social programs for those that didn't truly need to not reducing our dependency on oil. There is a whole big picture including the federal reserve printing more & more paper money that goes into where we are and where this is all going. If oil is used as the base line of our economy then control of every facet of it's use does fall within what politicians could have done to reduce our need. I think crude price was above $89.00 a barrel which eventually will translate to higher pricing on everything, starting with food. Actually the basics of life for most will begin to cost more. Then there is the simple math of the hidden taxes we all pay. As base pricing increases so does the increase in tax revenue gov. receives. A little here a little there & it all adds up. I think as world competition increases Americans are going to experience the kind of living expense Hooch Turner describes in his post. Unless of course politicians solve our problems. I view that as unlikely because they IMO are the root cause of people living paycheck to paycheck.
