Harvest time on the rez

Well it’s harvest time for wild rice on the White Earth Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota…


We rice in the old traditional way of polling a canoe and knocking the rice.


I spent last weekend ricing and cleaning wild rice with family…

The rice still needs to be dried.


After we clean the green rice by picking out all the reeds, sticks, etc.


What’s left is “green rice”


we then take the green rice to one of the rice dryers on the rez. It is then put in a big tumbler to remove all the chaff and to dry the green rice to finished rice.


The finished rice is then ready to cook and eat..

H’mmm I don’t know,,, I have only eaten real wild rice…

There is “patty rice” commercial rice grown and harvested the mechanized ways but,,, well,, it’s not for me…


Only buy REAL native harvested rice..

I love wild rice -- we get it here too, Scott. It's so much tastier and healthier than processed rice.

Thanks for sharing this; I had no idea what went into getting the wild rice -- only where it grows.
