Strange weekend or Gwen's escape from College.

Well most of you know my oldest Girl ( Gwen ), got her BA last weekend from UC Santa Cruz. As a proud father I was allowed to attend ( contrary to the advice of my Doctor ) He is lucky I left him alive ! Anywho Santa Cruz is a strange town, full of Liberal weirdo's and Super Tree-huggers along with what I like to call Free range rude college students. We go our room at the hotel and hooked up with Gwen. Our group was Momma Mary and myself. Gwen wanted a last hit on my wallet as an undergrad.
We got out on the main drag of the city and stopped at a Deli to get something to toss down our throats. I was a good Beast and had a salad with my roast beef sandwich. After I nailed the sandwich drank the wine and tossed the salad away I looked around. Not seeing my doctor anywhere I lit up a smoke. ( I know Its bad but somebody has to do it ). Some clown turns around and informs me that smoking is bad for you. I replied that I had heard the rumor before and blew a nice cloud of smoke in his direction.
We wander around town and Gwen and Mary did a number on my wallet. They even tried to get me to carry the bags. ( Well trained daughters ). well Mary is staying at gwens so Momma and I head for the Hotel. We clean up and after a while we go to dinner. As I did not see my doctor around anywhere I had Steak with all the trimmings along with a nice bottle of Noir. We went back to the hotel and after a bit went to bed.
Well in the AM we get ready as this is a somewhat formal thing I put on my Hand painted Hula shirt and we get to the college. The speakers are somewhat long winded so I head to the rear and have a smoke. One rather unkempt undergrad started telling me about how he is going to change the world. He notices my ring. I must explaine about the ring. Back in the early 70's during my days with the Ranger Training Bn, there was a ring called a Cadre Ring when you finished your tour and met some standards they gave you this ring. Well I got one it does look like a grad ring so I have been asked about it before. This kid looks at it and asks what college uses a Black stone in there ring. I inform him that it is a military ring I got when I was teaching at the Ranger Course. He looks at me and says " Rangers they are the crazy insane dudes in the Army " I looked him up and down and told him only when we are bothered by insipid little college boys. This kid looked hurt. well anyway I informed him about the Military lifestyle and a little about how things work in my Army. He listened and thanked me then took off like a shot. well Gwen got her paper and as we were leaving. An army recruiter started handing Gwen an information packet Gwen would not touch it. She looked at the young NCO and said I am already tooooooo Much like my dad a hitch in the Army would finish me. The kid looked at me and I said 25 years now I get a check to stay away. He nodded and we left. That night Momma and I kinda threw a small party for ourselves in town you know we got rid of one more and only one more ot got type of thing. We stop in a bar to get a drink and there is this kid I talked to at the graduation. He said something to a pal of his and they came over. End game was I told them I needed a replacement for my daughter in the Army It seem that the kids pal was joining the NG and was reporting to Basic the next week. I told him to do what he was told and all would be well. He said his dad had told him the same thing. As we were talking Momma just sat there getting cross eyed. The kids left and Momma said so this is what 4 sloe gin fizzes feel like. I had to guide her back to the hotel. The next day we headed home.

I love your stories, Beasty. It's a great feedling when the kids get those bits of paper at the end of their college years, isn't it. It won't be long now before Mary is off to college. I look forward to hearing about her escapades!

Marianne, it's not so much the kid's escapades, as Beasties!

Beast, I'm glad you were able to get out of prison for a few hours and for such a wonderful occasion.

Congratulations to you and Momma. Oh yeah, to Gwen too.

I gave Gwen some great advise. I placed my arm around her and in a level voice I told her to enjoy the day for in the morn I want her employed.

This is where Beast is smart. I have always given her up front charge cards. I put in an amount and thats that. I suggest all parents use them.
