Driver burned towels at Italian hotel

SANREMO, Italy, May 29 (UPI) -- A driver for a group of British tourists in Italy set fire to towels used by a group of German tourists after they laid claim to all the sunbeds in a hotel.

Glyn Bowden, a driver for a group of 55 British vacationers, said the Germans claimed the sunbeds at the beach and pool at the Viana Marina hotel near Sanremo on the Italian Riviera, The Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

Bowden said he initially just removed the Germans' towels from the chairs but "The following morning the Germans put them down even earlier so I did the same -- with them shaking their fists at me from their windows.

"The next morning about 20 towels were there again so I collected them up, put them on a pile on the beach -- and lit them. All the British tourists were cheering. But just a few minutes afterward three police officers turned up and arrested me," he told The Daily Mail. However, the hotel convinced the police to release Bowden without charges.

"They were going to charge me with criminal damage but the hotel -- which owned the towels --intervened on my behalf," he said.
