Smile Theodore Roosevelt Association

As a history major in college, I was exposed to more presidents then most people. Some I reviled, some I regarded with apathy some I liked. However, the most admired president from my point of view is Teddy Roosevelt. In an effort to learn more about him I joined the Theodore Roosevelt Association, About Theodore Roosevelt: President and more, from The Theodore Roosevelt Association.. I've always admired many of the stances he took. Especially because they are so apropos to today's political climate. Especially with regard to immigration.

Teddy's stand on immigration was a simple one. We believe in it, we encourage it, we protect them.........however several conditions must be met, the immigrant must serve a year in the military, he must learn english within 5 years of coming to the country or risk expulsion, he must assimilate himself into the American society thoroughly and whole heartedly & legally.

In addition to purchasing an annual membership for 35.00, I also bought a CD Rom that is biographical and just crammed with facts including 4 of his speeches RECORDED. I was stunned to sit back and listen to Teddy Roosevelt's voice projected through a century. They were recorded on Edison's grammaphone on those cylinder recorder devices.

I bought a Theodore Roosevelt Association pin which turned out to be an antique. In 1923, the Women's Roosevelt Assocation had several pins made and sold them to preserve Teddy Roosevelt's birthplace. This is one of those pins, an original one.

I thought Regina was going to kill me last night. She was trying to read while I was listening to TR's voice crackle through the years.

There are are also two volumes of his papers on the CD-Rom from his time as Governor of New York 1898-1900.

A very worth while purchase, it was. If we could only infect one of these current political idiots with Teddy's character and ideas, we'd be on the road to recovery as a nation.

Ollie

I agree about T. Roosevelt, Ollie! He was one of our greats and I'm glad there's a thread devoted to him.

Sagamore Hill, in Oyster Bay, here on Long Island was T.R.s primary residence. It is a wonderful place to visit and if you ever get to NY it would be well worth the trip there.

Sagamore Hill - Home of Theodore Roosevelt - Roosevelt Almanac

If I remember my history correctly, when he and the Rough Riders returned after the Spanish American War they were sent to a military camp on the East end of Long Island and quarantined there until the military Doctors gave them a clean bill of health. They were worried about them bringing home tropical diseases.

This is not about T.R. but about T.R.,Jr. Not much is said about him because of the overpowering popularity of his Father. Jr. was a hero in WWI as the Commander of an Infantry Regiment was wounded, gassed and left as a LTC after his service there. In 1919 he was one of the founders of the American Legion. Between the wars he became a successful businessman but before Pearl Harbor he requested to return to Active duty.

He fought in North Africa and Italy as a part of the 1st Infantry Division. He was then reassigned to England to become ADC of the 4th Infantry Division for the invasion at Normandy. He was the only General to land with the first wave at Utah Beach (he was first off his landing craft). His landing craft and those behind him had drifted a mile from where they were supposed to land. He rallied the troops, organized them and led them behind the German defenses on Utah. For his actions that day he was awarded the Medal of Honor. One month later, he had a massive heart attack and died. He is buried at Normandy.

One of the DVD's I reviewed had this story, I believe. I remember a story on one DVD about one of the landing crafts that was off course and the men being led to fight. I remember the talk and scenes about the hedge rows. I must find that and review it again - I don't remember it clearly (obviously!), but it was interesting.
