Wal-Mart Wishes You A Merry Christmas

It's 45 days until Christmas and there's no bah humbug at Wal-Mart stores for the 2006 holiday season. The aisles may be empty now, but a store spokesperson says Christmas is back and better than ever.

"You know we've learned our lesson, and this year we aren't afraid to say ‘Merry Christmas.’ So Christmas is officially back at Wal-Mart," says Marisa Bluestone.

The change comes after several groups boycotted the retail giant for saying “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.”

"I was kinda shocked that they would do that," says Wal-Mart shopper Glenda Arnett.

"Everyone is trying to please everyone, but that did not please a lot of people I don't think," says Wal-Mart shopper Brenda Lamb.

Bluestone says the retailer will be pitching "Christmas" almost as much as they do "value" to their shoppers.

"If it offends someone we try to change, and if it hurts your business, I think you bring it back," says Wal-Mart shopper Anthony Bailey.

Sixty percent more merchandise will be labeled "Christmas" rather than "holiday" this year compared to 2005.

"Last year, our theme was Home for the Holidays, and we had encouraged our associates to work with that theme and say ‘Happy Holidays,’ but we also let them greet our customers however they were comfortable," says Bluestone.

For the last several years, aisles were the called The Holiday Shop. Now, it will be The Christmas Shop.

A welcome change for employees, too. They say their goal is to pack the shelves with more Christmas cheer than ever before.

Bluestone would not comment on whether not saying “Merry Christmas” last year hurt sales.

In their zeal not to offend a few people, they wound up offending a whole lot of people.

Being boycotted by Christians was unhealthy for them, it seems. Maybe this will encourage Christians to start demanding other concessions to decency, for instance. It seems we may pack something of a wallop if we have the sense to take a stand against some of the things that are being done and promoted these days.
