Question Limbo in limbo as Pope undecided on where unbaptised babies go

I cant believe that the Catholic Church is still at this kind of stuff after everything that has happened it over the last number of years.

Limbo in limbo as Pope undecided on where unbaptised babies go - Irish Independent

Saturday October 7th 2006

POPE Benedict XVI has decided to keep the issue of limbo in a state of limbo.

He was widely expected to consign the place outside Heaven, Hell and Purgatory inhabited by the souls of unbaptised children to the theological scrapyard yesterday.

But at an early morning mass to celebrate the end of a two-year investigation into the subject by the Vatican's leading 30 theologians he decided not to decide. "The Pope did not mention it in his homily," said Archbishop Bruno Forte, who attended the mass. "We are still working on the document. No vote has been taken." The Vatican has made it clear that the concept of limbo is outdated and the Pope has said that it is merely "a hypothesis" and that he would "let it drop".

But it is rumoured that he had remained silent on the subject to foil the Vatican watchers and media outlets who are trying to anticipate his decision.

"This pope does not like leaks," a source said. "When the appointment of Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone as secretary of state was leaked, he postponed the official declaration from Saturday to the following Wednesday."

Father Luis Ladaria, the secretary of the theological committee, said that recent developments in theology had cast the idea of limbo into crisis.

"Evidently, God wants to save everyone and does not want to exclude anyone," he said.

Other Vatican sources confirmed that it was only a matter of time before the ruling was made.

A priest, who did not wish to be named, said the Pope's determination to "examine issues only intellectually and theologically" meant the end for limbo, which was invented by Peter Abelard in the 13th century.

It needs to be discarded. The Pope could and should admit the truth, I think. Simply say, "only God knows, but He is a God of Love, and on that we base our faith."

We don't have all the answers and won't in this life. Why not just say so? All this dithering about is nonsense.

I much prefer the idea of Limbo for innocent souls than the belief of some Protestant denominations that all unbaptised people, including children, go right to hell.

I don't blame him for not liking leaks and hope that they find whoever is leaking info. They sensationalize what should be serious.

I sure agree with that! Remember the picture of a small child, entitled "The Age of Innocense?" A child before age 7 was thought to be sinless, and of course he/she should be. So how could a child who died before birth be other than innocent?

We don't know how God does things; He has told us our ways and His ways are different. We simply must trust Him, and that's what faith is all about. We can't say He's a God who loves us and that He'd send innocent babes to hell in the next breath. It's downright silly and unreasonable - and unreasoning.

True - the leaks are inexcusable.
