A 179-year-old Irish £50 note sold for a world record €40,700 at an auction in London yesterday.

The Bank of Ireland note - one of the rarest in existence - is dated May 5, 1827.

Believed to be the only one its kind in private hands, the note eventually went to a private collector after a fierce bidding battle in a packed saleroom at a Spink's auction.

Banknotes specialist Caroline Weiner said afterwards: "The bidding bidder, who must remain anonymous, was thrilled."
