| Pending User   |  Phony sextuplets case Prosecutors charge couple in phony sextuplets case INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) — A couple who admitted lying about having sextuplets were charged Friday with stealing. Kris and Sarah Everson, of Grain Valley, were charged with one count each of stealing by deceit, a felony. The Eversons had collected cash and other gifts for the six newborn babies they said Sarah Everson had given birth to last month. They later admitted both to police and reporters that they had lied about the babies. The Eversons made a brief appearance in court Friday, where a judge entered not guilty pleas on their behalf. The couple were being held on $4,999 bond each and did not yet have attorneys. Their next court appearance is scheduled for May 3. The couple had claimed 45-year-old Sarah Everson gave birth March 8 but that they had kept it quiet because a family dispute meant their lives and the lives of their babies were threatened. But those the Eversons had turned to for help persuaded them to go to the media, and on Monday, their story was on the front page of The Examiner in Independence, leading to the eventual unraveling of their tale. On Thursday, Sarah Everson told The Associated Press that she had lied about her pregnancy even to her husband. She said he believed for months that she was pregnant, and police said she told them she went so far as to gain 40 pounds to further the ruse. Police Chief Aaron Ambrose said Sarah Everson told detectives she didn't confess to her 33-year-old husband until around the time the couple claimed the babies were born. Did anyone see the story last week where a couple wanted time off work so they put a fake obit in the paper. For HER 17 year old son! How dumb is that, not to mention creepy. Someone saw her son walking down the street and told authorities.
