That is a heart breaker, Scott. You can feel the young man's anguish.

Hi scotto.

Forgive me, but I shamelessly copied your post and posted it at three other forums I frequent.

I posted the picture along with the following post:

Quote:
IMHO, the Korean War Vets are a marginalised lot.

They came after the "greatest generation" that fought WWII
And before the "controversial" Vietnam War.
Despite Panama, Grenada, Gulf War I & II....

Till today, they're actions are looked upon much as a "police action".

Police Action? Tell that to someone who walked out of Chosin....
Here's a response from a nurse from my nursing forum:

Quote:
thanks so much for the photo of the Korean War vets. I really like & appreciate what you wrote above, thanks so much. It couldn't have come at a better time.....

I have been thinking of my Dad today, and for some reason could not shake the "down/sad" feelings that I have for him. He passed away in June 2006 and today I was really missing him. My father was a Korean War Vet, a proud member of the "Frozen Chosin". When I read your post...I can see him right now driving up in his car with his "Frozen Chosin" license plates and his Korean War cap on his head.

You are correct to say about the 'police action'...tell that to someone who walked out of the Chosin and I like to add the Bayonet Hill battle as well. Not many of the men in my Dad's infantry survived.

You, prmnrs & Jnett mentioned the Korean War Memorial in D.C. Yes, it is truly breathtaking, as well as all of the memorials that are there. I live in Maryland and have been there numerous times. My family and other relatives were there for the Korean War Veteran Memorial dedication in July 1995. We got to watch my father and the other wonderful vets march proudly in their parade on that very hot day. The men continued to march, some in full dress & some in shorts/t-shirts wearing their hats, the heat was stifling as it is on the East Cost, and terribly humid, but these men didn't waver...they marched for approx 2-3 miles!! My brother had his cam-corder and recorded the entire event for the weekend. I can remember elder vets pushing the wheel-chairs of other elderly vets in the parade...it was so touching. When President Clinton & President Kim of South Korea dedicated the memorial....there wasn't a dry eye among the thousands of people who were standing there.

I can still recall Clinton gabbing; gabbing about the brass and let's try to make it orderly here so everyone can view the memorials, he was trying to line up the top brass to view the memorials first, then the men like my Dad were allowed to view lastl...well, there were 'snow-fences' around the memorial field to keep people out until the dedication was over...and the next thing you know, I hear, "This is our memorial, we waited a long time for this"...well, I saw this elderly man dressed in his uniform pushing another elderly man in his uniform(most likely a WWII vet, since some of them were marching in the parade as well), then about 50, then maybe 100 or more....all these older men pushed the snow fence down...ever so gently.... in an orderly fashion...until the snow fence was down & they could manuver the wheel chairs, walkers & canes...then, they stood, some with arms around one another...in that awesome memorial and wept. Then, more and more soldiers, family and friends poured out onto the memorial. I'll never forget that day.

Again, thanks...as I mentioned, I was and still having a sad day, missing my Dad...and you made me think once again...how proud I am of my Dad and all those veterans.

Lizzie
