Default Operation Guardian Angel

Service member off-duty accidents cause an alarming number of fatalities and serious injuries each year. For years, commanders and safety professionals have wrestled with the problem.
We've conducted safety briefings, developed checklists, identified high-risk personnel, and gone to great lengths to enhance off duty safety. No doubt that all of these initiatives have a positive impact, but the numbers keep going up. We know that we have a critical influence shortfall during off duty hours. That's where you come in!
Operation Guardian Angel energizes civilian family members, friends, and community members to help us carry safety oversight into the off duty time. It's amazing how many times we investigate an accident and someone close to the victim says, "I knew that was going to happen." You are the ones who see the off duty risk indicators and may have the opportunity to provide caring intervention. In short, you could easily save a life!
Your Guardian Angel activities and your degree of involvement are strictly up to you. You might simply remind a service member to swim at an authorized area, don't drink and drive, buckle up, wear a helmet, or reconsider the amount of driving time required. Or you might choose to get more involved as a designated driver, discussing plans for a night out, or providing relevant risk management information for a trip or activity.
Check around to see what your Unit or community organizations are doing. If you don't find anything, get things rolling. Or do it on your own. Either way, you're a Guardian Angel.
