| SSG ![]() | I just read the thread on Pollution and I started thinking(scary, I know); has anyone ever noticed that when a disaster happens(Typhoon in India, earthquake in Pakistan, famine in Africa, etc) the United States sends help in the form of med supplies, food and military troops for Peace Keeping Operations. Who sends aid to the United States? Just a thought that bounced in my head. |

| Fallen Member ![]() | Canada deployed three Canadian Forces ships and one Canadian Coast Guard ship to the affected region to support relief efforts. The ships will work with the 2nd Fleet, U.S. Navy. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Public Safety, Anne McLellan, has been in contact with U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and advised him that Canada stands ready to provide assistance if needed. Canada's Air Force is sending two CH-146 Griffon helicopters to assist the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) in covering the Boston Search and Rescue (SAR) area of responsibility. We only have 10 of these helicopters in Canada at any one time - again 20% of our Armed Forces special equipment being sent on a humanitarian exercise, just because Mr. Bush said please. Canada is pledging its support through the International Energy Agency (IEA) in response to oil supply shortages in the U.S. Canada will contribute about 91,000 barrels of crude oil per day to the IEA's effort. Public Health Agency of Canada officials have been in contact with their counterparts at Health and Human Services (HHS) in the United States to offer National Emergency Stockpile System (NESS) supplies to assist in the relief efforts. Within 24 hours of a request from its U.S. counterpart, the Public Health Agency of Canada sent supplies from National Emergency Stockpile System. The materials – ranging from beds and blankets to pharmaceuticals and antibiotics – arrived in Atlanta on September 5. A Canadian Forces aircraft has been made available to transport Canadian Red Cross personnel to Texas. The Canadian Embassy in Washington hosted an all-day fundraiser for relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. An estimated 750 people donated almost $24,000 (US$20,000) to the Red Cross at the Embassy breakfast and lunch events. The Government of Alberta will contribute $5 million to humanitarian assistance for victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster in the American Gulf Coast. As part of Operation UNISON, more than 1000 Canadian Forces personnel were deployed to the U.S. on September 6. That same day, Canada deployed three Canadian Forces ships and one Canadian Coast Guard vessel, which reached the affected areas in four days. Three embarked Sea King helicopter detachments were also deployed. A composite team of 35 navy divers was sent to assist the U.S. Navy with activities including identification and removal of hazards to navigation and levee inspection. On September 6th, the Government of Canada, together with the Government of Quebec and the Canadian Red Cross, coordinated the shipment of 20,000 beds and 26,000 blankets to the U.S. On September 3, the Canadian Air Force transported 27 Canadian Red Cross and five FAC officials to Houston, Texas. Transport Canada has contacted regulatory bodies in the US to offer assistance and coordinate activities (Federal Aviation Administration and United States Coast Guard) and has issued an exemption to allow Canadian air operators and flight-crew members to extend the flight duty times to conduct flights for humanitarian purposes in support of the hurricane relief activities in the US. British Columbia sent the Vancouver-based Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team to Louisiana to help in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, conducting 119 successful rescue operations in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana before the National Guard arrived in the area. Vancouver's USAR team includes highly trained members who are able to conduct rescue operations in a variety of challenging situations, including at collapsed building sites and in fast flowing water. This is not the first time that Canada has come to the immediate and unquestioning aide of US citizens in peril. The last time was when seventy planes, carrying over 13,000 US-bound passengers landed at four airports in Newfoundland-Labrador. Canadian citizens opened their hearts, their homes and their wallets for these stranded travellers without immediate question of compensation, but out of compassion for their fellow human beings, September 11, 2001. http://gocanada.about.com/od/special.../a/katrina.htm Foreign aid to U.S. for Katrina relief © 2005 The Associated Press. We are blessed to be a Donor nation. Many interesting stories abound on this topic. I am glad you asked the question. |
