My guess is that we started putting a plurality of lawyers in Congress. And I wouldn't be surprised if it was about then that the Senate became elected instead of appointed.

I haven't researched this. Just a guess on both counts..

There are more taxes that aren't in that list. I used to have a complete list but lost it.

I do remember that there was close to 100 taxes that the middle class pays.

"There shall be no tax upon a tax," or words to that effect are written some place. The Constitution?
Politicians do not understand language in the same sense as this lay person .
Oh shucks! This Redneck!!

Yeah and compare your typical politician nowadays to the typical politician 100yrs ago.

100yrs ago, everybody, including politicians, grew up struggling for everything. It was normal for your local politician to have been some kind of business maverick and/or war hero. Now that has almost become an oddity. The politicians that are successful businessman are usually only that because they were born into the old boy network thus having the opportunity to become "successful businessman" handed to them on a silver platter, and few have ever felt the need to serve the country that has given them the ultimate luxurious lifestyle. Your perspective on things are vastly different depending on how you have 'aquired' things!

Growing up working for everything you have and putting it all on the line to sacrifice for your country produces a different person than somebody who's version of 'putting it all on the line' is spending 20 million of their 200 million dollar fortune to get elected to office. Of course they are going to tax us to death, it wins them more votes to get the power that is what they desire so desperately!
