Question ...on a shingle

Okay folks and folkettes, I've heard them there colonial types (from the USA) talk about sh*t on a shingle...now.... do you read it, eat it, play with it or use it to repair bullet holes ?

and does sh*t on a shingle have anything to do with grits ?....would you have a conversation like this;

Me: "Hey Doc I've got a bad case of the grits"

Doc: "You surely have son, now take 2 asprin and stay away from the blue oyster bar"

Cheers,
Simon

It's an expression I don't use, Armourer, for obvious reasons. Did you ever hear of chipped beef? I haven't seen it since WWII, that I can recall, but it was rather tasty. We would fry it, adding a bit of flour and whatnot - it was really a depression dish, I believe. It made a sort of stew. This was spooned over toast, and so one had the dish you refer to above.

The name, I believe, was an Army term. The food filled a hungry stomach.

Marine Corps staple... My Ma used to make it when I was a kid, but then she was born during WWII. I liked it when it wasn't too lumpy! Still crave it from time to time and just let that urge pass as quickly as possible.

Gee, how did he know that was what was on the dinner menu at my place tonight - "Looks like sh*t, but tastes great!" Yep, staple in my household growing up, too - usually on the nights dad cooked because mom was at work (so at the holidays and just before taxes).

Found on the Hobbies forum:

First, get your ingredients!

2 through 5lbs of hamburger

One onion (size depending on how much onion flavor you like. If you don't like the taste of onions, use a small one. Not using an onion will make the SOS taste like it's missing something)

Lotsa flour!

Gallon of milk

First, chop your onion into fine pieces, then sauté your onion until it's clear.

Next, add your hamburger into the onions and fry until the hamburger is brown. While frying, add several good shakes of Worcestershire sauce. Drain most of the juices from the pan.

Add flour by the heaping tablespoon to the mixture while cooking over a low heat. When the hamburger won't take anymore flour, add milk until the texture is creamy, slightly on the runny side. This will firm up somewhat when the mixture heats up again. Stir while heating at a medium-high heat until the mixture starts to boil. Add Worcestershire sauce to taste.

I like using Johnny's Seasoning Salt when I brown the hamburger for this recipe, then add a little more about the time I add the last addition of Worcestershire sauce. How salty you want it is up to you.

Spoon over eggs or toast. You really need to spoon it over toast for this to be true S.O.S.

This stuff tastes best when reheated. You can freeze for future use if you want. I make it by the 5 or 10 batch and freeze it in the single serving batch for my kids.

Lordy knows I am craving it now. I like to stick a couple of eggs and taters in between though. Top it off with tobasco, and I'm all set!
